Reasons to go to Bluedot Festival

With the recent announcement of Festival No.6 on hiatus our attentions turned to a festival of other sorts this weekend, with the return of bluedot for 2018. Set at Cheshire’s famous observatory Jodrell Bank and a stone’s throw away from Manchester, bluedot taps into it’s venues theme for a festival focusing on Science and Music. Read our review of bluedot 2017 for a round up of last year’s antics. The festival itself stays true to form year on year, albeit mixing up the array of performers and talks available. It is this consistency which makes it so enticing to return year on year. STYLE etc has rounded up the reasons not to miss it next year. 1. The Consistently Good Music 2018 saw headliners The Chemical Brothers launch their new show within the UK, alongside other top music acts including The Flaming Lips and Gary Numan. What’s perfect about bluedot is it’s commitment to a theme, all music flows consistently to the beat of an electronic over arch, providing a nice synchronicity as you wander from tent to stage. 2. The Science Talks This years talk with Richard Dawkins saw a huge line of revellers queuing up as the event…

ITV’s Big Reunion Boy Band Tour is about to come crashing into Manchester on Sunday 26th October! The ultimate boy band collective are about to embark on a 13 date UK Arena tour, this time bringing along seven boy bands from both Big Reunion series including Five, Blue, 911, A1, Damage, 3T and the recently formed 5th Story. The super-group features Gareth Gates, Another Level’s Dane Bowers, Adam Rickitt, Kavana and Blazing Squad’s Kenzie. Combined they have had 27 top ten hits including five number ones, won hoards of MOBO, Smash Hits, and MTV awards and played to sold out crowds around the world. And now, by popular demand, belting out and busting the moves from some of the biggest (and our favourite!) hits of the nineties, the boys are back to take you on a trip down memory lane. The tour is expected to create mayhem as the boys all set off on the tour bus together around the UK from today and judging by some of the explosive accounts, tear-jerking scenes and dramatic revelations from some of the pop heroes, the tour bus is set to be one interesting ride as the boys hit the road! 5th Story member Adam Rickitt said:  “The exciting thing is…

Festival No.6 Returns with Line Up Announcements

The eagerly anticipated Festival No.6 returns this year for another weekend of acclaimed musicians and picturesque surroundings. Situated in the coastal resort of Portmeirion (of 60’s cult TV show ‘the Prisoner’ fame), there is a magical air to the place; with real life props of castles and greenery to look at as you enjoy a wide range of genres all night. Two headliners have already been revealed in the form of Beck and London Grammar, to accompany already confirmed artists Martha & the Vandellas,  Julio Bashmore and Neneh Cherry.  London Grammar said of the festival “It’s a real honour to play Festival No.6 again. Portmeirion is a beautiful and somewhat surreal location. We can’t wait to perform there again!” There’s literally something to suit everyone’s musical taste. It’s not all about the music either, there’s more to enjoy with a heavy influence of art and culture, not to mention food prepared by Michelin starred chefs. If camping’s not your bag there’s plenty of alternate choice of accommodation in the form of cottages, yurts, tipis and even castles. Anyone wanting a festival with a difference won’t want to miss out. The music acts will be performing across the entire site, by the whimsical Italianate architecture…

‘Back to Life. . Back to Fashion’ Soul II Soul’s Jazzie B launches clothing range at Harvey Nichols

‘Back to life. . .back to reality. . ’ If you were to hear those lyrics you’d instantly recognise one of the biggest hits of 1989, from reggae, funk and RnB collective Soul II Soul. As well as creating club classics, Soul II Soul brought their own unique mix of style and fashion to the masses. ‘The Funki Dredd’ – a cartoon design by Derek Yates which became synonymous with Soul II Soul and club culture as a whole, is featured on a range of t-shirts and sweatshirts that form a limited edition Classics Collection, exclusive to Harvey Nichols. On Wednesday, Jazzie B – a cultural pioneer who helped define British black music and style, came to Manchester to launch the collection. He also entertained 200 customers with a live DJ set and Q&A session. On behalf of STYLEetc, musician and songwriter Ben Williams sat down for a pre-event chat with Jazzie. Here’s what he had to say about fashion, musical influences and, err. . what he thinks of Simon Cowell! What music did you grow up listening to? I think I was very fortunate to grow up in the seventies.  The best way I can describe what I listened…

Adam Ant: Dandy in the Underworld

When 80’s Punk met Burundian African Drums, the resulting music created an enduring sound and distinctive image. And the artist behind it all; Adam Ant. From 7th March to 29th April, Proud Camden will be celebrating the life of this unique musician with a photographic exhibition of exceptional portraits. Adam Ant: Dandy in the Underworld, co-curated by the man himself, features images taken throughout his lengthy career to the present day. During his life Adam Ant has worked with Chris Duffy, Gerard McNamara, Jill Furmanovsky, Denis O’Regan, Chris Cuffaro, Robert Mathey, Janette Beckman, David Corio and Hannah Domagala; photographers who have each played a part in creating the iconic images that are instantly recognisable. The collection, brought together in the eclectic surroundings of Camden, is a fantastic celebration of thirty five years of a truly individual artist, musician and icon. However, the exhibition also includes some never-before-seen images showing a different side to the white-striped Dandy Highwayman. Looking at the early black and white photos you can see an inner vulnerability, usually masked by external confidence. Devoid of the makeup and stage persona the man shines through. Yet the legendary image of the Highway Man remains throughout, an image first…
