Wahaca, brainchild of Masterchef 2005 winner Thomasina Miers is now a Mexican mainstay in many cities. They invited us at STYLEetc to try a celebratory summer menu exploring Thomasinas’ favourite dishes in the last 10 years.
To begin with we were recommended the fan favourite Mexico City nachos. These have been altered with in-house made salsa and mouth-watering layers of chroizo and cheese sauce. Some of the best nachos we have ever eaten!
Next was the tacos! Now they have changed the tacos up a little with a focus on bigger tacos but reducing the size from 3 to 2. First out we’re the Buttermilk chicken tacos (2) changing from breast to thigh was a subtle but drastic improvement, beautiful crispy skin and tender chicken with a great spicy mayo.
The rib eye tacos (2) are a new addition, these were a stand-out dish, the steak was very tender, offset by salty goodness from a crispy cheese skirt.
The star of the show by far was the Devon crab and avocado Tostada. The tostada itself was perfectly crispy, on top was silky fresh crab, and was a delight to eat, when crab is this good it’s my favourite thing! We also had a side of Frijoles, these were a luxuriously soft turtle beans pureed with a gentle spice, a great compliment to all the dishes.
All in all some really nice fresh summery vibes from Wahaca, it’s reasonably priced good food.
