Travel: Condado De Alhama, Murcia

June 28, 2015

Situated just 90minutes from Alicante Airport, Condado De Alhama is like a home away from home. Since being built, the resort has seen thousands of Brits leave the rainy rat race of the UK for the laid back sunshine of Spain.

Fully opening in July 2009, Al Kasar is home to a Spar for all your holiday essentials, as well as The Clover Irish Bar, Big G’s American Diner, La Cata Steak House and Bako Sports Bar. There is also a beauty salon and plans to open an Ice Cream Parlour and Indian takeaway in time for the summer rush.

We’ve already been twice this year, thanks to a friend owning one of its two bedroom apartments, with a roof terrace. Our first trip in February was great for taking a break out of work and getting an idea of what heat actually feels like after a snowy winter! We thought it was warm and wandered about it vest tops but the locals thought otherwise! Our editor even got sun burn! Evenings were cold but nothing that you wouldn’t expect in February.

Our next trip was in April, just as they were experiencing a heat wave. We spent our weekend lazing on the roof terrace and by the pool getting a tan to show off when we got back to rainy Manchester. While the evenings were spent trying out the onsite bars and restaurants.

Inside Big G’s

We ate the the American Diner for breakfast most days, where a Bacon Roll and a coffee costs less than 5 euros! They also do great milkshakes which you can take away! To celebrate our editors birthday, we ate at the steak house where the steak was cooked to perfection! For three people, with starters, mains and drinks, the bill came to around 60 euros.

The resort is huge and surrounded by palm trees, as well as a golf course, tennis courts and serval bars and restaurants. There are also over 20 swimming pools in each of the various gardens that make up the property, as well as playgrounds for the kids. There are lots of properties available to buy on the resort and many available to rent, making it great value for a family holiday.

Out of the resort, the Puerto de Mazarron is just a 15 minute drive away. Visiting out of season, it was hard to get a feel for the atmosphere but the long promenade has many restaurants and bars over looking the beach and marina, that would be a great spot for watching the sun set with a glass of sangria.

Other sites include the mountains near Alhama and the city of Murcia is only a 20minutes drive. At El Corte Ingles, its like a shoppers paradise with many department stores and boutique shops. There has also been rumours that a Paramount Pictures Theme Park is due to be built in the surrounding area, so watch this space!

Luckily, we had the use of a car to get from the airport to Condado and see the area as public transport is limited. Airport excursions can be booked via Condado Excursions, but I would definitely recommend hiring a car if you plan on leaving the resort.

Flights are reasonably priced when booked in advance. We flew with Ryanair and Monarch and despite their reputation, we landed ahead of schedule! We’ve already planned our next trip to Condado de Alhama in the summer so make sure you’re following our Twitter for the latest pictures from our trip!
