On Saturday 27th October, Finnish fashion and lifestyle brand, Marimekko, presented their AW12 clothing collection with the first ever fashion show to be held in People’s Park, Shanghai. Chinese and international media, fashion bloggers and fashion followers gathered and took their seats on a sea of brightly coloured Marimekko print beanbags, to watch the stunning display.
In a genius move, Marimekko brought together two art forms, fashion and dance, choosing to have dancers from the renowned Jin Xing Dance Theatre wear the designs to perform a specially choreographed catwalk show to music by Matti Ahopelto. The movement of the dancers demonstrated perfectly the comfort, freedom, joy and colour of the Marimekko designs.
On the same day, an exhibition entitled Design Colours Life – Contemporary Finnish Design and Marimekko opened in the Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA) Shanghai, in the heart of the People’s Park. The exhibition presents Marimekko as a forerunner and example of the inclusive, democratic approach of Finnish design thinking and sharing the story of how its bold patterns and colours, timeless designs, play an important international role in increasing the emotional wellbeing of people. The exhibition will run until 7 December 2012.
