Fairfax & Favor, a luxury fashion brand, has conducted a research using online data to rank the world’s most fashionable cities for the year ahead. They used five key metrics to score each city out of 100, including: number of fashion articles mentioning the cities, Pinterest searches for travel inspiration, Instagram fashion posts in the cities, average monthly searches for travel and hotels for each place. The brand looked at cities with the UK and across the world to curate two lists.
Manchester ranked second across the UK
For the UK list, London came first with an index score of 100/100 and Manchester ranked second place at 29/100. As we know, Manchester is a city with a strong industrial heritage, especially in the textile and cotton sectors. The city still has a significant role in the fashion industry today. The city is home to many different fashion styles, you can see a variety of street style looks just spending a small amount of time people watching on Market Street. From the innovative looks from the shops of the Northern Quarter to the smart casual looks of Spinningfields, you can find a range of attires to draw inspiration from. According to the data, Manchester had more than 1 million mentions in online fashion articles recorded and 50,000 monthly average searches for Pinterest inspiration from the city. Manchester also had more than 33,000 fashion style posts on Instagram and some of the highest searches for travel and hotels on our list, showing it is a popular destination for fashion travellers.
London was the most fashionable city in the UK and worldwide
Looking at the global data, London received 239,000 online searches for hotels per month and over 5 million searches on Pinterest, indicating a high demand for travel to the city. London also tied with Los Angeles as one of the top destinations searched for on Pinterest, showing its appeal among fashion enthusiasts.
Other cities that made the top 10 list were Paris, New York, Las Vegas, Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dubai, Singapore, and Amsterdam. Paris came second with a score of 88, and was the most popular city for Instagram fashion posts, with over 12 million posts tagged. New York was third with a score of 86, and was the most mentioned city in fashion articles, with over 9,000 articles. The main worldwide cities may not be surprising but show the staying power of these culturally significant fashion destinations.
Some surprising findings were that Milan, the traditional fashion capital of Italy, ranked 21st on the list, with a score of 58. Rome, on the other hand, ranked 11th with a score of 74, showing that it has overtaken Milan as the preferred destination for fashion lovers in Italy. Toronto, despite ranking 14th overall, was one of the highest rated cities for Instagram style posts, with over 4 million posts tagged.
