Interview By Hayley Jackson.
The Lisa Stickley brand has been thriving since it was established in 2003 by Central Saint Martins and Royal College of Art graduate Lisa Stickley. The distinctively beautiful range features home textiles, fashion bags, china and stationary collections, each boasting a contemporary style with a traditional twist. The Lisa Stickley shop is based on Landor Road in Clapham, London, collections can also be spotted in the likes of Selfridges, Fenwicks and Heals as well as internationally. We have been to visit the lovely staff at Lisa Stickley HQ to research further.
The Landor Road shop is lovely and welcoming, you seem to be a very cheery bunch! What is the best part about working for Lisa Stickley PLC?
Thank you, yes we are generally a very happy office. Being such a tiny team (only 3 of us full time and office based) it’s really important to get along, we work hard and have fun. We are all from design backgrounds and all love the brand and the designs we are working with which makes the job very enjoyable.
Lisa Stickley has a really unique brand character, where does this Quintessentially English style come from?
The brand was started by Lisa Stickley in 2003 and the designs/brand ethos were inspired by her and her childhood. As we now have a new designer it is very important to us to maintain the brand identity through a very natural progression in the design process. Keeping it British, eclectic and chic.
How are the gorgeously distinctive illustrations created?
All the illustrations start as hand drawings/sketches with inspiration from 50’s and 60’s. The drawings are then developed on photoshop. Our brand uses colour very carefully with each print to create the finished product.
What would you recommend as the perfect gift ’for her’ from the Lisa Stickley current collection?
The perfect gift for ‘her’!? That’s a tough one as all our products make wonderful gifts. I would suggest our ceramics- perhaps a classical cake stand or the grand jug. Or go down the bag route and get the ‘bess weekender’, it is a wonderful bag to take away, it can fit a lot in as well as looking stylish.
While working in a retail brand you must attend many exciting events, what was your favourite event of 2011?
We organised an event earlier this year to launch our bedding in Heals (Tottenham court road) which was really successful and lots of fun!
Which other designers do you admire in the homeware field?
Oh there are lots of gorgeous designers around at the moment. We are all fans of Orla Keily of course and brands such as Anorak and Thornback and Peel.
There have been a lot of lovely new additions to the handbags, shoppers and travel bags section of the website – which is your favourite?
Yes we have spent a lot of time working on developing our bag collection. In the range I would say the ‘gracie bowler’ either round collar charcoal or mushroom/charcoal hankie flower is my favourite. Also a very popular bag for this season is our new fantastical ‘irene baby bag’ complete with changing mat.
You’ve recently opened the pop-up shop on Abbeville Road, what are the benefits of having a pop-up shop?
Yes we opened in November and it has been very successful so far. Pop-up shops are a great way to introduce a brand to new demographics and trialling locations for potential permanent shops.
What exciting developments should we look out for from Lisa Stickley in 2012?
We are in for another exciting year in 2012! We have new prints and colours launching early next year. We will also be popping up in new locations. Keep your eyes peeled on our website and facebook/twitter for any exciting announcements.
