Celebrities raise money for four-year-old cancer sufferer Leighton Cook at Altrincham Football Club in Cheshire, and the STYLE etc team were sideline to catch all the action. Leighton Cook is a brave young boy, and as we watched him run around the pitch, showing off his football skills, excitedly meeting the celebs, it’s hard to believe he is suffering from Stage 4 Neuroblastoma.
Neuroblastoma is a rare and malignant cancer and in children who are over one year old at diagnosis, it is very difficult to treat. Leighton was three years old when he was diagnosed in June 2010. Leighton is unfortunately at stage 4: High risk. His chances of survival range from 20% – 80% and Leighton has a 30% chance of survival.
Leighton’s mum explains: “We have started fundraising to reach £50,000 so we can send Leighton to Germany for further treatment which is not offered in the UK. Not only would the treatment increase Leighton’s chance of survival to 50%, but he would also have stem cells removed so if there was a relapse, Leighton would have another chance for more treatment to fight Neuroblastoma.” Our reporter, Jess Reid, caught up before kick off with team captain and Emmerdale star, Danny Miller, ahead of the blue’s 7-3 victory.
Danny explains why he was so keen to support this worthy cause. “Leighton’s mum, Lynzie, got in touch and asked us to help Leighton raise much needed funds for his treatment. I wanted to do whatever I could to help, so I gathered all the boys together for this match.”
The competition was star studded and fierce on the pitch as Corrie heart-throb, Ryan Thomas, who plays Jason Grimshaw, captained the white team, whilst his brother, Adam Thomas from Emmerdale played in opposition with the blue’s. However, STYLE etc’s ‘ Man of the Match’ has to go to top goal scorer, Ralph Little, who played a blinder!
White team mates captained by Ryan, included Coronation Street co-stars, Jack P Shepherd, Sam Aston and Chris Fountain. Whilst Danny led the blues which included Britain’s Got Talent and now Waterloo Road’s, George Sampson, and Royle Family star, Ralf Little, and Boohoo.com founder, Umar Kamani, who made the match happen after calling upon his showbiz friends after being inspired by brave Leighton’s fight.
The stands were packed with famous faces, fashionistas and frenzied fans cheering on the boys and showing their support to Leighton. Jess from STYLE etc was keen to chat with the defeated team captain, Ryan Thomas, after the game.
Ryan proved he wasn’t a sore loser explaining “this was the first time playing football together as friends, so even when we were being hard on each other, it’s all just a bit of banter, which is great to see because there is no sort of rivalry in that sense.”
However, Jess asked if there’s any brotherly rivalry in the style stakes?
“Well, there was a time when I would go for all sparkles on t-shirts, but I’ve grown out of that. I think my brother’s sort of taken my place. I’d have to say Adam is the most stylish brother.”
“And to describe my style now?.. Well, they call me Simon Cowell because I just wear black jeans and a black t-shirt so then no-one can rip me for what I’m wearing!”
STYLE etc wish #TeamLeighton all the best of luck in raising enough money. If you would like to donate and show your support please visit the Leighton Cook Fundraising Page on Facebook or follow @Leighton_Cook on Twitter.
