From May 1st to June 12th, Selfridges stores in Trafford and Exchange Square Manchester will be launching an exciting six week campaign on the definition of beauty, and what it means in today’s society.
Over the six weeks, six key themes will be discussed in the two stores, each selected to articulate and represent today’s question of beauty. These topics – Men and Beauty, Age and Beauty, Adornment/Extreme Beauty, Global Beauty, Androgyny and Natural Beauty – will all be illustrated by a brand new advertising campaign by German filmmaker and photographer, Norbert Schoener. This campaign will be totally untouched and natural, featuring members of the public alongside the tagline “Hello Beautiful”.
This new and inspiring project will be celebrated in both the Trafford and Exchange Square branches of Selfridges with a host of multi-faceted activities and workshops over the period, featuring some of the world’s biggest beauty brands.
In the Exchange Square branch, Selfridges are offering the exciting opportunity to work with their resident bespoke beauty expert, make-up artist and A List favourite, Armand Beasley. After previously working at the Oscars and BAFTAs, Armand will be on hand bringing his expertise and knowledge of make-up and all things beauty to Selfridges customers. Shoppers can book in for individual consultations with Armand, where he will take you on a one-on-one trip through the store to select your own personal must haves, and advise you on your beauty needs. He will be available from May 7th for individual appointments on the stores Lower Ground Floor for a redeemable £75 booking fee.
A host of inspiring beauty talks are also on the agenda throughout the six weeks in Exchange Square, each touching on the separate topics, with celebrities and beauty industry insiders alike discussing what their beauty means to them and the beauty industry.
Speakers include Fresh Meat actress Zawe Ashton on Thursday May 8, as she discusses what constitutes ‘black (and mixed race) beauty’ in the media, and how beauty translates across different audiences with journalist Bim Adewunmi.
Thursday May 15 sees diversity campaigner Caryn Franklin in conversation with Helen Walmsey-Johnson (The Guardian’s Invisible Woman) and Jody Furlong (one of London’s top casting directors) about the relationship between beauty, brands and the older woman in “Who are You Calling Invisible? Beauty and the Older Woman”, plus several other talks with the likes of beauty guru Sali Hughes (June 4) and celebrated drag performer Cheddar Gorgeous discussing gender and beauty on May 21.
All talks are priced at £15, which includes a glass of wine and tasting platter from Selfridges own delicious Italian eatery, San Carlos.
Elsewhere in Selfridges Trafford, a ground breaking new fragrance shopping experience will be being held in the form of The Fragrance Lab. Customers are invited to claim their new signature scent in a brand new experience – using different stimuli determine a totally unique fragrance. The lab, created by the experts at Givaudan perfumers aims to create individual scents, each reflecting the personality and character of each customer, as they walk away with a 50ml bottle of their bespoke new fragrance. The experience costs £55 and tickets can be purchased online.
The Beauty Project launches at Exchange Square on May 5, and Trafford on May 8. For more information and tickets, visit http://selfridges.com
