The red carpet was laid out and the rain certainly didn’t dampen spirits on this drizzly, yet star-spangled evening in Manchester’s hip Northern Quarter. Guests were out in force to celebrate the launch of Rob Czlapka’s new Adee Phelan salon on Stevenson Square, and with the fizz flowing and plenty of mingling taking place, it was a friendly, cosy event for sure.
Prosecco and Budweiser galore quenched thirsts with sushi canapés to soak it all up, and the atmosphere felt intimate as owner Rob showed us a wall-projected video of himself and his staff introducing themselves and thanked his family and friends for helping out with the construction of the salon.
While many of its original features have been kept, the before photos were almost unrecognisable. The space has been lovingly restored but maintains that rough-and-readiness so quintessential to our beloved Northern Quarter. Exposed pipes, beams and antique tiles and antlers (yes, antlers) all make an appearance and the place positively hums with eccentric flair and creative knowledge. It has a vintage feel right down to the record player providing the tunes, although on this night we were treated to the dulcet tones of a very talented singer and pianist, whose beautiful hair flowers were provided by Frog.
Stars local and beyond were in attendance also, with Brooke Vincent of Corrie fame hinting that she’s been using Adee Phelan’s curlers for years and is sorely in need of a replacement pair. Marcus Collins of X Factor fame came along for a look around the brand new salon, as did this year’s Apprentice winner Francesca MacDuff-Varley.
